The following positions are important in the Australian government:

Head of State – (Australia’s Queen/King)

The Governor-General is the representative of the Head of State in Australia.

Governor – the representative of the Head of State in each state

The Prime Minister of Australia is the head of the country’s government.

Premier – the chief executive of a state government

The leader of a territory’s government is known as the Chief Minister.

Member of Parliament (MP) is the people’s representative in the national and state legislatures.

Senator – a member of Parliament from a state or territory

Mayor/Shire President – head of local government

A councilor is an elected member of a municipal council.
